Different types of flatbreads in Indian restaurants at Redland Bay

They come in many different forms—leavened, baked, fried, unleavened, steamed or slapped across the vast walls of Tandoor. Till date, there are over 30 kinds of Indian breads and they differ from region to region. With each city putting their own spin on the type of cooking method and flour used, it may just astonish you. But what these breads usually have in common is their ability to polish off delicious curry sauces or house various types of stuffing and toppings. There are North Indian restaurants in Brisbane that will have most of the flatbreads we talk about.

It may be scary to set out and discover the expansive world of Indian breads, so we’re here to help. Here’s a beginner’s guide to seven most popular Indian breads and how to eat them.

Chapati
The word Chapati means “slap” in Hindi, giving us a fair idea of how the Indian flatbread is made. It may be humorous to think about it like that the unleavened bread is formed by slapping and stretching out the dough, it is how it really happens. It is pressed between the palms of the cook before finding its way on a tava—a flat, disc-like frying pan.

Naan
This is probably the most famous of Indian breads. It is this delicious leavened bread which is best served fresh off the tandoor with dishes like dal makhani, tandoori chicken, paneer dishes and kebab. While it is traditionally made in a tandoor, it can be easily be made in an oven or pan at home. Just remember to brush it with some butter or ghee when you’re done or instruct them to put one of them when you order from Indian takeaway Brisbane.

Puri
if you see a fried to a golden, crispy puff round piece, it might be Puri. It is a delicious unleavened Indian flatbread that pumps up once the dough hits the oil. It is best had with chana masala (thick chickpea curry) and korma (vegetables and braised meat) or a dal.

To name many others, there are Rumali roti, Parotta, Bhatura, Paratha, Kulcha, Tandoor Roti and many more. Each has their own specialty that can be understood after having it with other lentil and curry dishes. Today there you will find North Indian cuisine at Alexandra hills where you can experiment with such flatbreads. Go ahead and have fun.
